The Impact of Thoughtful T-Shirt Ordering: One Size Does Not Fit All

Have you ever experienced a moment that completely undid you? That moment when you realize the power of even the smallest gestures?

I recently had one of those moments. It was during a volunteer appreciation event when I decided to purchase custom-sized t-shirts for each volunteer. One particularly tall volunteer, who had been serving in multiple organizations for over 15 years, was stunned that someone had thought to get a shirt that was actually long enough for him. I was shocked that he was so shocked. And moved that he was so grateful. Why hadn’t I thought about this sooner? Probably because I never had to think outside of S-XL in any clothing I had ever purchased. This meant that up until this point, I had made one of my key volunteers feel unseen, the opposite of my intention. This entire interaction ignited something within me and made me question the way we as ministries order t-shirts on so many levels.

Did you know that churches in the United States alone order millions of t-shirts every year? According to recent statistics from the National Church Goods Association, an estimated 50 million t-shirts are ordered by churches annually. That's a significant number, considering the potential impact these shirts can have on our volunteers and the communities we serve.

It's time for us to think more strategically about the t-shirts we order.

Here are a few simple considerations that can make a world of difference:

1. T-Shirts that Fit:

Size inclusivity matters. When ordering t-shirts, take into account the diverse body sizes of your volunteers. Offering a range of sizes ensures that everyone feels seen, valued, and comfortable wearing their volunteer shirt. This may mean you need to order shirts that are offered in a larger size range, or find shirts that are a similar color and style but have extended sizing, and yes they will be more expensive, and no you shouldn’t charge more for it. Remember, one size does not fit all, and by providing the right fit, we communicate that we care about each and every person serving alongside us.

2. White Shirts and Undergarments:

If you choose white shirts, consider giving a heads up to volunteers who may need to wear undergarments. Certain skin tones, body hair, or skin conditions may require additional layers for modesty or for ensuring the shirt remains opaque. By being aware of and sensitive to these considerations, we create a more inclusive and comfortable volunteer experience for everyone involved.

3. Purchase from Ethical Organizations:

Price point is important, but let's not compromise our values. Take the time to research and order t-shirts from organizations that align with our ethical beliefs. Too often, we unknowingly support companies that go against the very principles we as Christians stand for. By making intentional choices, we can ensure that the organizations we support through our t-shirt orders share our commitment to justice and integrity.

Imagine the impact we can make by implementing these small changes in the way we order t-shirts. By taking the time to customize sizes, be mindful of potential discomforts, and select ethically sourced products, we have the ability to elevate the experience of our volunteers, support organizations that share our values, and build ministries focused on inclusivity and lasting impact. Together, let's make these 1% changes in t-shirt ordering that will make 100% difference in the lives of our volunteers and the communities we serve.
